Four Injured in Freeway Accident
Two would-be good Samaritans were injured early Saturday when they were struck by a car on Interstate 5 in Chula Vista while trying to help a disabled motorist on the busy freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.
In all, four people were hospitalized in the 2 a.m. accident, authorities said.
Robert Hansen, 24, of Spring Valley was northbound on I-5 near E Street when his car struck a bridge railing and spun out of control, coming to rest in the outside traffic lane. Moments later, Steven Lewis, 21, and Charles Baird, 18, both of San Diego, stopped their car and ran back to assist the injured man.
As they crossed the highway, a third car driven by Brian Greenwell of San Diego struck the disabled vehicle and the two men, authorities said.
Baird and Hansen were taken by Life Flight helicopter to the UCSD Medical Center in serious condition. The other two men were also hospitalized but their conditions were not available late Saturday.
Authorities said the northbound lanes of I-5 were closed for 90 minutes while paramedics treated the injured.
