From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The earthquake-damaged San Francisco Bay Bridge is scheduled to be reopened to full traffic at noon Nov. 17--one week earlier than the original target date, Caltrans informed Gov. George Deukmejian. “The speedy reopening of the Bay Bridge symbolizes to the world that the Bay Area has bounced back from the tragic earthquake,” the governor said. Department of Transportation Director Bob Best warned that inclement weather, or other unforeseen complications, could delay the date, but he is proceeding with plans to reopen the span Nov. 17. Best also cautioned that earthquake-related difficulties still exist on the related 280,480 and 880 freeways.
