A fast-moving brushfire scorched several acres in a canyon in Pacific Palisades today, briefly threatening a new development of multimillion-dollar homes and condominiums.

The Palisades Highland fire, reported shortly after 11 a.m. in the 900 block of Palisades Drive near what is known as the Santa Ynez fire road, raced up a canyon wall but the advance of flames was stopped by fire crews and water-dropping helicopters.

Fire Department spokesman Greg Acevedo said five helicopters, dropping 300 to 400 gallons of water on each pass over the canyon, and 29 companies of firefighters were sent to battle the Palisades blaze.

With minimal winds, the firefighters were able to contain the fire before it could reach any residences.

The fire erupted near a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway that had been closed by a landslide earlier in the week. A huge cloud of smoke billowing hundreds of feet into the sky could be seen for miles around.

A second brushfire, meanwhile, sprang up near the Simi Valley Freeway and Topanga Canyon Boulevard in Chatsworth.

No injuries or property loss were reported in either fire.
