ON THE SIDELINES : 1 Soccer Club Banned, 1 Fined

AEK Athens was banned for one season from European Club competitions and Real Madrid was fined $125,000 by the Union of European Football Assns. today for fan rowdiness and player misconduct.

The Greek club was penalized for “grave spectator rioting” during its Cupwinners’ Cup game against Olympique Marseille on Nov. 1, a press statement from Europe’s soccer authority said.

The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Committee fined Real Madrid for “extremely rough playing” in the champions’ Cup game against AC Milan. Real striker Manuel Sanchis was banned from five European club competition games for using physical violence.
