FULLERTON : Help Sought With Tree-Planting Effort

Share

The Tree Society of Orange County will hold a training session at Cal State Fullerton today for volunteers willing to lead groups in a tree-planting effort.

Participants will learn to select trees that will thrive in a given area and how to plant them, said Tom Larson, one of the society’s founding members.

The Tree Society needs volunteers to help in its goal to nearly double the number of trees in Orange County by 2010, Larson said.

The county needs more trees to help digest the growing amount of carbon dioxide produced by cars and factories, Larson said. Increasing levels of the gas are causing a global warming, which is melting the polar ice caps and could one day lead to flooding in coastal cities.

“Trees also filter the air of all the dust and polluting particles,” he said. “Psychologically, they are a relief to us all.”

The training session will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the Fullerton Arboretum on the Cal State Fullerton campus.
