More Woes: Aztecs Lure Only 20,564

Despite a late advertising push by the San Diego State athletic department and news reports detailing its financial woes, only 20,564 turned out Saturday night to see the Aztecs defeat Wyoming, 27-17.

The crowd was several thousand below what department officials have said was needed to meet preseason ticket sale projections for the game.

That should add several thousand dollars to a shortfall in anticipated football ticket sales revenue that university officials acknowledge already has surpassed $200,000.

The crowd failed to reach projections despite heavy discounting of tickets, the distribution of several thousand free tickets, including about 1,100 at a show of support for the baseball team earlier in the day. The crowd was only slightly larger than the 17,000 school officials were predicting in the week before the late ticket drive.

The crowd figure represents all in attendance, including complementary admissions, participants and stadium personnel.

The crowd, the third largest of the season, brought the Aztecs’ season average to 19,395 in the 60,409-seat San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.
