Dokes Faces Washington; Gonzales Takes On Lozada in Forum Fights
Heavyweight Michael Dokes and bantamweight Paul Gonzales, each in search of a world title fight, appear in a twin main event card at the Forum tonight.
Dokes (39-2-2), a one-time World Boxing Assn. heavyweight champion, meets former California heavyweight champion Lionel Washington (10-5). Gonzales (14-1), 1984 Olympic light-flyweight gold medalist from East Los Angeles, meets Antonio Lozada (31-8) of Tijuana.
Dokes, 10-1 in a comeback that began in late 1987 after being sidelined nearly three years because of a cocaine addiction, has lost only to No. 1-ranked contender Evander Holyfield in the comeback.
Gonzales didn’t record a knockout in 11 flyweight fights but has had three knockouts since moving up to bantamweight. He’s campaigning for a world title bout at either super-flyweight or bantamweight.
