Willis’ 6 Touchdown Passes Lead No. 5 Florida State to 57-20 Win

Peter Tom Willis threw a school-record six touchdown passes--all in the first half--and fifth-ranked Florida State won its eighth consecutive game by routing Memphis State, 57-20, Saturday.

The Seminoles (8-2) scored 21 points during a 68-second span en route to a 51-13 halftime lead. Willis, who completed 23 of 31 passes for a career-high 482 yards before leaving midway through the third quarter, threw five touchdown passes in the second quarter.

Willis, a fifth-year senior who sat on the Florida State bench until this season, completed 20 of 24 passes for 423 yards before intermission.

Florida State’s corps of wide receivers, known as the “Fab Four,” all caught scoring passes along with freshman tailback Amp Lee, who scored on a 51-yard play.

Ronald Lewis was the lone player to catch two touchdown passes, combining with Willis on scoring plays covering 12 and 59 yards.

Lawrence Dawsey scored on a 26-yard pass, Bruce LaSane caught a 15-yard touchdown throw and Terry Anthony’s 12-yard scoring reception ended the first-half outburst.

Memphis State finished at 2-9.
