The U.S. soccer team will learn next month where it will begin play in soccer’s 1990 World Cup in Italy.

Luca Montezemolo, general manager of the organizing committee, said the U.S. team would be based in Florence, Bari, Genoa, Bologna, Udine or Palermo, but that a final decision would not be made until the draw on Dec. 9.

Montezemolo said the presence of the American team in next summer’s tournament should fortify the future of both soccer and the World Cup.

The United States, which qualified for the tournament for the first time since 1950 with a win over Trinidad and Tobago Sunday, will play host to the 1994 World Cup.
