NHL ROUNDUP : No. 2 Goalie Wregget Leads Flyer Resurgence

Share

When Ron Hextall gets in shape to play, he might find himself the backup goaltender for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Hextall has played only two games this season because of a leg injury and a suspension. His replacement, Ken Wregget, has led the Flyers’ recent surge from last place in the Patrick Division to within five points of the first place New York Rangers.

Murray Craven scored twice and Wregget stopped 23 shots Friday at Philadelphia and the Flyers defeated Edmonton, 5-1. It was the third consecutive game in which Wregget allowed only one goal.

The Flyers held hot Mark Messier without a point. In two previous games, he had four goals and three assists to lead the Oilers to two victories.

Detroit 3, Calgary 2--With just over a minute left, it appeared the Flames would end their skid with a 2-1 victory in Detroit.

But Steve Yzerman and Gerard Gallant scored goals 24 seconds apart and the Red Wings had their sixth victory in 22 games and only their second in the last 15.

The Flames are 0-5-3 in their last eight games.

Pittsburgh 7, Washington 4--Mario Lemieux had a goal and two assists at Landover, Md., to lead the Penguins. His goal, in the third period, was on a penalty shot.

Minnesota 7, New Jersey 6--Neal Broten scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period at Bloomington, Minn., and the North Stars went on to take the overall lead in the NHL with 31 points.
