Syracuse took the top spot in both the Associated Press and United Press International college basketball polls. Syracuse opened its season Monday with a 95-79 win over Rutgers.

Kansas, which was previously unranked, was voted No. 2 by UPI and No. 4 by AP after the Jayhawks upset No. 1 Nevada Las Vegas and No. 2 LSU to win the Preseason National Invitational Tournament.

Nevada Las Vegas was dropped to No. 5 by UPI and No. 6 by AP. LSU was voted No. 7 by UPI and No. 9 by AP.

Arizona, which beat defending national champion Michigan, moved to No. 2 in the AP poll and the No. 3 spot by UPI.

Georgetown moved to No. 3 in the AP poll and No. 4 in the UPI poll.
