THE SIDELINES : Landry: Accent on Experience
Former Dallas Cowboys Coach Tom Landry says he would not have taken the same approach as his successor, Jimmy Johnson, in trying to rebuild the NFL team.
But Landry, who was in Greenville and Spartanburg on Tuesday on behalf of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, said that “only time will tell whether they’re on the right road or not” in going with younger players to turn the franchise around.
Dallas, which won only three games last year, is 1-11 with four games left in the regular season.
Landry was the only coach the Cowboys had in their first 19 years before being fired by new owner Jerry Jones.
“Everybody has their own thoughts” on how to turn the Cowboys around, Landry said. But he said he would not follow the route Johnson is taking “because I believe a great deal in experience. I would have tried to blend the experience with new people as you try to rebuild.”
