McCorkle’s Act Back at Capistrano Valley : The Players: Senior forward should be the county’s best. But Marina center Cherokee Parks--only a junior--will be the most heavily recruited.

THE STARTING FIVE

Scott McCorkle, forward, Capistrano Valley: A senior, McCorkle was the runner-up to Rick Swanwick (now at UC Irvine) as The Times’ Player of the Year. McCorkle, 6-feet-5, has signed with Syracuse. He led Capistrano Valley to the 5-A championship and averaged 24.1 points a game. Great jumping ability makes him first-team all-slamma jamma.

Cherokee Parks, center, Marina: He’s already the greatest name in county basketball and about to become the greatest player in some time. Only a junior, Parks, 6-11, averaged 20.3 points and 10.3 rebounds and was the runner-up in Sunset League MVP voting. A week at the Nike Camp in Princeton, N.J., this summer gave Parks experience against the nation’s best.

Mustaphi Abdi, forward, Huntington Beach: Transferred from Savanna over the summer. Abdi, 6-3, was the Orange League player of the year as sophomore, averaging 17.7 points and 11.2 rebounds. Also shot 60% from the field. In two playoff games, he averaged 31.5 points and shot 78% from the field.

Sam Sabbara, guard, Western: Best point guard in Orange County by far, and could prove to be the most versatile, too. Sabbara, 6-1, averaged 14.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.8 assists as a junior. What more could you want in a point guard? The best player at Western in years.

Keith Walker, guard/forward, Brea-Olinda: Averaged 26 points a game last season and has improved greatly since. The 6-5 Walker, had 65 points in a scrimmage last week.

THE SECOND FIVE

Daryl Cole, forward, Orange Lutheran: The best of the small schools players. He shot 55% from the field and 85% from the free-throw line last season. Averaged 21.6 points a game.

Robert Conlisk, center, Los Alamitos: The second-best big man behind Parks, and improving. Conlisk, a 6-9 senior, averaged 16.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and four blocked shots. Voted the No. 1 center at the Superstar Camp at UC Santa Barbara this summer.

Greg Evans, guard, Ocean View: A fine outside shooter, Evans, 6-2, has signed with Loyola Marymount. He averaged 10.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and three assists.

Rob Johnson, guard/forward, El Toro: Johnson averaged 17.3 points and 3.8 assists as a sophomore. He was a first-team all-leaguer. He’s one of the best three-point shooters.

Chris Kostoff, guard, Capistrano Valley: A point guard, Kostoff directed the Cougars to the 5-A championship. He averaged 15 points and 8.4 assists.

TWO TO WATCH

Jason Cunningham, forward, Los Alamitos: A 6-4 sophomore transfer from Mayfair, Cunningham is the younger brother of Griffin running back Erik Mitchell, a 1,000-yard rusher this season. Griffin Coach Steve Brooks raves about him.

Reggie Geary, guard, Mater Dei: A 6-2 sophomore, Geary transferred from Ocean View and has to sit out for a calender year. He’ll be dominant on the junior varsity level until he becomes eligible for the varsity team in February. Monarch Coach Gary McKnight says he’s as good as he has seen.

BEST OF THE REST CENTERS

Bill Martineau (Edison)--At 6-9, 200, Marinteau qualifies as all-space-eater. He averaged 7.5 rebounds a game.

Brett Mitchelson (Sunny Hills)--A 6-6 junior, Mitchelson averaged 8.2 points and 6.9 rebounds.

Derek Stone (Mater Dei)--A 6-8, three-year starter, Stone is as solid and hard-working as they come. Averaged 7.1 points and five rebounds.

Kevin Wilborn (Canyon)--Averaged 12.4 points and was the county’s fifth-leading rebounder with 10.5 average. A 6-4 junior.

Shawn Wiltshire (Southern California Christian)--Coach Mike Murphy calls Wiltshire, a 6-7 senior, one of the best in any division. Averaged 19.2 points and 13 rebounds.

Others to watch: Greg Everett (El Toro); Steve Marusich (Servite); Eric Preuss (Savanna).

FORWARDS

Joey Cohen (Woodbridge)--Averaged 16 points and 8.3 rebounds as a 6-3 swing man, carrying on in the tradition of fine front-line players at Woodbridge.

John Molle (Irvine)--As a sophomore, Molle made an impact on the Vaqueros’ 5-A runner-up team. A 6-4 junior, Molle shot 62% from the field, 82% from the floor.

Elton Moore (Saddleback)--Was a key player off the bench, helping the Roadrunners to a runner-up spot in the 5-AA. He’s a 6-3 string bean, cut in the mold of Craig Marshall, Saddleback’s defensive specialist now at UC Irvine.

Oscar Wilson (Santa Ana)--The Man-Child has grown into a Man. At 6-3, 225, he’s a force inside. Averaged 10 points and eight rebounds.

Others to watch: Fred Amos (Foothill); Chris Kirby (Villa Park); Wes Kollar (La Quinta); Trent Jullian (La Quinta); Jeff Leedom (El Modena); Bryant McLemore (Woodbridge); Joe Squyres (Garden Grove); Romalis Taylor (Woodbridge).

GUARDS

Rene Arias (Fullerton)--Tough, determined, unselfish, good outside shooter. Averaged 17 points a game and shot 65% from three-point range.

Jim Barker (Kennedy)--A 6-5 swing man, Barker camps out on the three-point line. He averaged 16.3 points.

Augustine Heredia (Estancia)--He’s not real big at 5-11, 150, but is one of the best long-distance shooters in the county. Averaged 15 points a game.

Randy Kriech (Trabuco Hills)--Another good outside shooter, Kriech helped the Mustangs to the state championship game.

Jason Quinn (Mater Dei)--Quinn, a 5-10 senior, averaged 3.5 points and 5.5 assists and was Angelus League player of the year.

Tes Whitlock (Loara)--He’s playing on a mediocre team, but that makes his efforts stand out all the more. A 6-2 junior, Whitlock is a three-year starter.

Others to watch: Addi Barkordar (Canyon); Tom Barraza (Western); Mike Bradach (El Dorado); Danny Castro (Anaheim); Jimmy Galbert (Saddleback); Andy Karich (Mater Dei); Terry Mann (Sunny Hills); Tim Manning (Trabuco Hills); Phouphet Singbandith (Magnolia); Doug Weaver (Fountain Valley); Mark Wilkinson (Foothill).
