The Minnesota Timberwolves Wednesday night accomplished a first since joining the NBA this season--they won a game on the road.

Tony Campbell scored 31 points at Miami as the Timberwolves beat the Heat, 105-100, to break a seven-game losing streak.

It was the first time the Timberwolves topped the 100-point mark on the road.

“We’re happy, but we’re not popping champagne,” Campbell said. “We’ll forget it at midnight and move on to the next game.”

The Timberwolves hit 41 of 76 shots. Campbell made 12 of 22, Tyrone Corbin 12 of 20.

Billy Thompson led the Heat with a season-high 28 points. It was Miami’s fifth loss in a row.

The Wolves hadn’t played since a loss Saturday at Charlotte, and Coach Bill Musselman said the break worked to their advantage.

“Having a day off helped us. We took Sunday off, then on Monday we played pickup games. On Tuesday, we picked up seven new plays. Their execution of seven new plays with one day of practice was exceptional.”

Miami, by contrast, was playing its second game in as many nights.

“We have not been good on the second night of back-to-backs,” Coach Ron Rothstein said. “The first nights we’ve played well . . . It’s part of growing up. We have to learn to deal with it.”

New York 129, Golden State 111--Patrick Ewing had a season-high 44 points and a career-high 24 rebounds as the Knicks beat the Warriors at Oakland.

Ewing, whose career-best in points is 45, had 17 rebounds and 22 points in New York’s 72-point second half as the Knicks, trailing by a point at halftime, built an 11-point lead in the third period.

Boston 118, New Jersey 95--Larry Bird had 29 points and 11 rebounds at East Rutherford, N.J., as the Celtics dealt the Nets their ninth consecutive loss.

Kevin McHale had 23 points for the Celtics, who kept the Nets under 100 points for the ninth game in a row.

The victory ended a six-game road losing streak for the Celtics, who have won only twice on the road.

Indiana 100, Utah 88--The Pacers played their best defensive quarter since joining the NBA in 1976, holding the Jazz to eight points in the second period on the way to victory at Indianapolis.

Indiana’s previous best defensive quarter came on Nov. 29, 1983, when the Pacers limited Philadelphia to nine points.

Atlanta 111, Washington 104--Dominique Wilkins overcame a one-for-seven start to score 27 points as the Hawks beat the Bullets at Landover, Md.

Washington took a 95-94 lead with 7:28 remaining but Atlanta then pulled ahead, 102-96, with 4:15 left and kept the lead for the rest of the game.
