Recovering: Kitty Dukakis has made her first public speech since she was hospitalized Nov. 6 after swallowing rubbing alcohol. The crowd of 150 at the Wednesday evening fund-raiser in Boston gave her a standing ovation at the beginning and end of her talk. “I’m doing all right,” she told a well-wisher. A spokesman for Michael Dukakis said Mrs. Dukakis is undergoing treatment in the Affective Disorders Unit at Deaconess Hospital and spending time with her family.

Try again: Talk show host Dick Cavett needed 35 tries to make a videotape promoting West Virginia. But give him a break: He made it in Japanese. West Virginia Gov. Gaston Caperton will take the tape on a nine-day trip to Japan this month to promote what he says Japan and West Virginia have in common: mountain ranges, a proud history and eyes on the future.

Gone: Tammy Faye Bakker and followers of imprisoned evangelist Jim Bakker moved their ministry Thursday out of an Orlando, Fla., shopping center for points unknown. “I guess you could say we’re all packed up with nowhere to go,” said spokesman Donnie Beck. The ministry owes $35,000 to Shopper’s World, a nearly abandoned mall, and the owner had asked Tammy Faye Baker to leave.

Impolite thief: What’s the proper thing to do when one’s $15,000 white mink coat is stolen from one’s chauffeured limousine? Ask Miss Manners. When etiquette columnist Judith Martin entered an Atlanta bookstore recently to autograph her latest book, “Miss Manners’ Guide for the Turn of the Millenium,” her driver also left the car for a moment. The result: A thief broke a window and took the coat and other valuables.
