HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL : Torrey Pines Advances to Final of Own Tournament

Torrey Pines, which lost all-section players Kevin Flanagan and Courtie Miller to graduation, is obviously doing a lot more than just rebuilding its boys’ basketball team this season.

Friday night, the Falcons defeated Mountain View-Arizona, 91-39, in the semifinal round of the Torrey Pines Tipoff Tournament.

Torrey Pines’ Carter Brown led all scorers with 14 points. Guard Kyle Armstrong, a returning starter, had 12 and Bill Schiebe had 11. The Falcons outrebounded Mountain View, 41-20, and converted 11 of 18 three-pointers.

Hilltop Tournament

Chula Vista 80, Hoover 71--Derek Chapman and Shane Howell led the Spartans with 25 and 21 points in a first round game at Hilltop. Junior center Roger Blake had 25 for Hoover. The Cardinals led by six after three quarters, but Chula Vista outscored Hoover, 28-13, in the final eight minutes.

Sweetwater 92, Point Loma 47--Sweetwater (1-0) raced to a 19-0 lead in its rout at Hilltop. Carlos Campbell and Joe McDowell led the charge. Campbell finished with 22 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. McDowell had 22 points, five rebounds and nine assists. Point Loma (0-1) played without many of its expected regulars, who played against Rancho Buena Vista in a football playoff semifinal.

Helix Tournament

Helix 86, Montgomery 36--Jason Falcaner had 22 points and Lloyd Lake 17 to lead the Highlanders, which led, 47-20, at halftime at Helix.

Warhawk/Norsemen

Patrick Henry 73, Madison 54--Jason Lonsdale scored a game-high 26 points to lead Patrick Henry. John McKenna led Madison with 19.

Lincoln 75, Coronado 72--Guard Ken Garner scored 22 to lead Lincoln, which held Coronado to three points in the third quarter.

UC/San Diego Tournament

Escondido 56, Mar Vista 51--Tyler Sommer scored 30 points to lead Escondido. Mar Vista made it close in the fourth quarter, outscoring Escondido, 14-5. Tim O’Neal and Tim Page led Mar Vista with 14 points apiece.

San Diego 80, Castle Park 50--Clark James, a 6-5 guard, led San Diego with 37 points, 20 rebounds, four blocks and two steals. San Diego had trouble with Castle Park’s press and was behind, 39-23, at halftime.

University City 67, Crawford 43--University City’s Jerome Price led all scorers with 23. Anthony Hill added 19, including three three-pointers for University City.

Nonleague

Bonita Vista 84, West Hills 42--Rope Perry had 22 points and eight rebounds, Mike Barnett had 20 points and four rebounds to lead the Barons at home. Bonita Vista (1-0) led, 17-7, at the end of the first quarter, 38-21, at the half.

Mission Bay 63, Clairemont 62 (0T)--Wyatt Spencer led Mission Bay with 19 points and seven rebounds.

Girls’ basketball

Santana/El Cajon Tournament Serra 29, Patrick Henry 21--Lynn Thoms had nine points to lead Serra, which outscored Patrick Henry, 7-2, in the first quarter. Tammy Kotnik led Patrick Henry with eight points.
