ROUNDUP : Chapman Women Win Chico State Championship

Julie King scored 17 points to lead Chapman College to a 73-60 victory over Chico State in the championship game of the Chico State women’s basketball tournament Saturday.

Ruth Akahoshi scored 16 points for the Panthers. Chapman is 6-1 on the season.

In the Mid-American women’s basketball tournament:

Missouri 71, Cal State Fullerton 55--Marcia Brooks, the tournament’s most valuable player, had 30 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Tigers to the championship of their tournament in Columbia, Mo.

The score was tied, 35-35, at the half, but Brooks made three three-pointers in the second half to help Missouri pull away. The Titans’ Stacey Oughton fouled out with 10 minutes 30 minutes remaining, Jeannine Battaglia with 7:30 and Jennifer Beckmeyer with about 2 minutes to play.

Gina Miller, who made the all-tournament team, had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Jill Matyuch and Kathy Werth each had 16 points for the Titans (2-1).

Lisa Sandbothe and Ericka Fields scored 10 for the Tigers (3-2).

In California Coastal Conference women’s basketball:

Pacific Christian 49, Loma Linda 39--Jody Pierce had 13 points and Gina Atkins 12 to lead Pacific Christian (2-4 overall, 1-0 in the conference) at Loma Linda.

In the Disneyland/Freedom Bowl women’s basketball tournament:

Brigham Young 70, UC Irvine 67--BYU had six players score in double figures as they defeated the Anteaters for third place.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Southern California College 85, Whittier 45--Nora Menkan had 24 points and Kristen Bevis 16 for host SCC (2-2). The Vanguards led Whittier (0-4) at the half, 42-22.
