Boat Accident Under Inquiry

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a boating accident that sent two boaters to the hospital with minor back injuries, sheriff’s deputies said Sunday.

About 10 p.m. Saturday, Chad Christopher Douglass, 24, and Ty Harris, 20, both of Huntington Beach, were fishing in a rubber dinghy near the entrance to Huntington Harbour. Douglass said he had just hooked and thrown back a small leopard shark when they heard cries of alarm from people in a nearby fishing boat and turned to spot a boat bearing down on the dinghy.

They were struck by the Golden Spirit, a 38-foot powerboat from Huntington Beach. Harris and Douglass claim that their dinghy was outside the channel at the time and that the operators of the Golden Spirit were at fault.
