Duke Coach Steve Spurrier has interviewed for the Phoenix Cardinals’ head coaching job, a Phoenix newspaper reported today.

The Arizona Republic said Spurrier confirmed that he met with the NFL team’s general manager, Larry Wilson, last Thursday at Durham, N.C.

Although Wilson would not give details about the meeting, he told the Republic, “I think he has an outstanding record, and I thought we had a good meeting.”

The Cardinals fired fourth-year Coach Gene Stallings Nov. 20 after Stallings had announced that he would not return next season. The team hired running backs Coach Hank Kuhlmann as interim coach for the rest of the season.

The Republic reported today that Redskins assistant Joe Bugel, Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Fritz Shurmur, Minnesota defensive coordinator Floyd Peters and Fresno State Coach Jim Sweeney have all expressed interest in the job and have talked to Wilson. Wilson has said that he hasn’t ruled out Kuhlmann for the job.
