Permit OKd for Gourmet Market

The Rancho Palos Verdes City Council Tuesday approved a conditional-use permit that will allow Trader Joe’s, a popular Pasadena-based wine and cheese store, to open an outlet in the Terraces shopping center at 28849 Western Ave.

In November, the Planning Commission approved the permit with a condition that delivery times be limited to between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. However, neighboring residents and other Terraces tenants told the council that they wanted the moderately priced gourmet market in their neighborhood and weren’t concerned about late-night delivery noise.

Michael Parker, Trader Joe’s senior vice president, agreed to council conditions that delivery trucks restrict their access to the Terraces from Western Avenue and that unloading noise be reduced if necessary by a hand-operated, electric forklift.

“We attempt to be good neighbors,” Parker said. “We owe our success to our customers.”

In 18 months, the city will reevaluate the noise of the deliveries.
