From Times staff and wire service reports

Fire swept through an apartment building under construction and spread to an adjacent condominum complex in Pasadena overnight, forcing 50 people out of their homes and causing $5 million in damage, officials said today.

With flames springing at least 75 feet into the night sky, the fire late Wednesday torched palm trees lining a sidewalk and could be seen from as far away as downtown Los Angeles, about 10 miles to the south.

No serious injuries were reported.

Some residents said they heard an explosion immediately before the fire was reported and saw three men in jogging suits running from the construction site. Fire officials said the cause of the blaze was under investigation. The construction site was hit by an arson fire that caused $5,000 in damage last Friday, they said.
