GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Sortino Leads Unbeaten Marina to Championship

Melisa Sortino scored 17 points as unbeaten Marina High School pulled away early to defeat the host school, 58-36, Saturday in the championship game of the Ceres girls’ basketball tournament.

Sortino, a 5-foot-7 senior guard who was named the tournament’s most valuable player, made four three-point shots. The Vikings (5-0) took a 16-8 lead after one quarter and were never headed.

Gillian Bean, a junior forward, added nine points and eight rebounds for Marina, and Sortino was joined on the all-tournament team by backcourt partner Christa Yorke.

In the first round of the Savanna tournament:

Los Amigos 57, Anaheim 15--Carrie Elsaesser, a 6-2 junior center, scored 18 points and blocked six shots to lift the Lobos (3-1) into a second-round game against Mission Viejo.

Mission Viejo 61, Dominguez 27--Center Jennifer Rohrig scored 21 points and had 22 rebounds for Mission Viejo. Forward Mary Andrew added 16 points and 12 rebounds, and point guard Carrie Burt contributed 15 points and 7 assists.

Fullerton 51, Newport Harbor 32--Sommer McLane scored 22 points and the Indians (5-0) rallied from a one-point first-quarter deficit. Minette Gomez scored six of her eight points in the second quarter, when Fullerton outscored Newport Harbor, 13-6, to take a six-point halftime lead.

Loara 42, Canyon Springs 39--Tracy Titus, a 6-2 center, scored 17 points and had 14 rebounds before fouling out early in the fourth quarter, and the Saxons held on to win for the first time in four games. Loara will meet Savanna in a second-round game Tuesday.

In first round of Santa Ana Valley tournament:

University 41, Garden Grove 26--Denise Gandara had 19 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals to lead Unviersity. Gandara had nine points in the fourth quarter when University (3-2) broke a 20-20 tie. University advances to play Santa Ana Valley Thursday in the semifinals. Chris Baccel had 10 points for Garden Grove.

In the Etiwanda tournament:

Tustin 66, Walnut 47--Point guard Wanda Sequeria scored 20 points for Tustin (4-1) in the third-place game. Nancy Zinh added 14 points and Shari Needham had 13 for Tustin.

In a nonleague game:

Costa Mesa 53, Newport Harbor 28--Olivia Bicamille scored 16 points for Cotsa Mesa (2-2). Ali Izumita scored 13 for Newport Harbor, which had to play two game in a day because of a scheduling commitment.
