Edison High School beat Marina, 50-44, for third place in the Irvine World News basketball tournament Saturday night at Christ College Irvine. It was a struggle all the way.

“It was two really tired teams,” said Edison Coach Jon Borchert. “We’ve played seven games in 10 days. Both teams ran out of gas and fatigue makes everybody do stupid things.”

Consider the happenings of Saturday’s fourth quarter:

--Neither team scored in the first 3:07 of the quarter; and they only scored 17 points combined (Edison 11, Marina 6).

--Marina (5-4) made one of 11 field goals in the final eight minutes after trailing 39-38 going into the fourth quarter.

--Marina’s six quarter points included four on free throws--two by Travis Boyd and one each by Cherokee Parks, who had 20 points in the entire tournament, and all-tournament selection Brant Shelor--and two on a hanging baseline jumper by Sean Haselrig with eight seconds remaining.

--Edison (6-2) made only two of six field goals and turned the ball over three times in the final quarter.

“Games are like this when you’ve played four or five games in a week,” said Marina Coach Steve Popovich. “It’s just a matter of sucking it up and playing.”

Said Edison 6-10 center Bill Martineau: “When you play good defense a lot of teams go in the tank against us.”

Martineau, named to the all-tournament team, had eight points and helped seal the victory with two free throws in the final two seconds.
