Senior middle blocker Daiva Tomkus became the school’s first three-time All-American in women’s volleyball when she was chosen on the American Volleyball Coaches Assn.-Russell first team. Bruin middle blockers Elaine Youngs , a sophomore, and Natalie Williams, a freshman, were named to the first and second teams, respectively.

University of Hawaii senior offensive lineman Larry Jones, a graduate of Hamilton High School, was named to both All-Western Athletic Conference first teams, selected by the coaches and the media. The Rainbows (9-2-1) will play host to Michigan State (7-4) in the Aloha Bowl on Monday in Honolulu.

Erica Badran-Grycan of Palisades High School was named the most valuable player in 4-A Los Angeles City girls volleyball. Others named to the first team from the Westside were Kristin Becker and Andrea Gundershang of Palisades, and Sharon Fink of University. Second-team selections included Michelle Badgett of Westchester, Diane Martin of Palisades and Nina Withrington of University.

St. Monica High School defensive backs Lamar Lyons and Albert Jones were named to the All-CIF Southern Section Division VIII football team selected by sportswriters on the athletics board of the First Insterstate Bank--Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles.

Westside high school girl volleyball players named to All-CIF Southern Section teams were Santa Monica High senior Laurel Trotter, 4-A second team; Windward junior Jenny Johnson and Brentwood seniors Kristy Mack and Denise Ross, 1-A first team, and St. Bernard senior Karin Jinbo and Brentwood sophomore Sara Simmons, 1-A second team.

Dodo Cheney of Santa Monica and her daughter, Christine Putnam of Escondido, both won singles and doubles championships, a tournament first, in the seventh annual Southern California Tennis Assn. Senior Grand Prix Masters tournament at the Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego. Cheney, who has won 195 national amateur titles, captured the women’s age-60 singles and teamed with Corky Murdock of Los Angeles to win the 65 doubles. Putnam took the 35 singles title, and she and partner Uta Hegberg of Oceanside won the 35 doubles. Alice Middleton of Santa Monica won the 40 singles.
