For pro football fans, this Christmas weekend’s gift is that the playoff spots finally will be decided. For college basketball fans, their gift is the possibility of seeing a single-game scoring record.

In a rarity, both Los Angeles pro football teams will be on the air simultaneously Sunday. The Rams meet the New England Patriots on Channel 2 while the Raiders visit the New York Giants on Channels 4, 36 and 39 at 10 a.m.

Sunday’s other pro football telecast is one of only three games without playoff implications. The defending Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers, already assured of home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, face the Chicago Bears at 1 p.m. on Channels 2 and 8.

There are three NFL games today, with two of them expected to be finales of one type or another. Joe Walton figures to coach his final game for the New York Jets at 9:30 a.m. on Channels 4, 36 and 39 with the Buffalo Bills providing the opposition. Steve Largent, the NFL’s all-time leading receiver, will bow out in the Seattle Seahawks’ 1 p.m. contest against the Washington Redskins on Channels 2 and 8. The American Football Conference Central Division title will be decided at 5 p.m. on ESPN when the Houston Oilers play host to the Cleveland Browns.

Because of the heavier than usual Saturday NFL schedule, there are only six live college basketball games today. But what the schedule lacks in quantity, it is made up for it quality. Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42 will broadcast a double-header from Las Vegas, with No. 13 Nevada-Las Vegas meeting No. 16 Iowa at 10:30 a.m., while No. 6 Michigan faces Seton Hall at 1 p.m. in a rematch of last season’s national championship game.

The day’s most intriguing match-up pits No. 7 Oklahoma against Loyola Marymount at 9 p.m. on ESPN, in a game where the 200-point boundary could be broken. The Lions have led the nation in scoring the last two seasons, with the Sooners placing second. The teams are 1-2 again this season, with Oklahoma on top with a 134.5 average. LMU set the single-game scoring record with 181 points against U.S. International University last January.
