COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Rancho Santiago’s Blount Cleans Up on Boards

Forward Corie Blount had 24 points and set a Rancho Santiago College single-game record with 21 rebounds as the Dons defeated Palomar, 93-69, Friday in a nonconference game at Palomar.

Blount, a 6-foot-10 freshman, had 13 offensive rebounds. Blount had a four-inch advantage on Palomar’s tallest player. Four other players had 18 rebounds for Rancho Santiago.

Blount was 12 of 15 from the field. He did not play the final five minutes. Forward Matt Lien had 23 points for Rancho Santiago, the top-ranked community college team in the state. Lien was 10 of 19 from the field.

Alvin Loftis and Gene Altamirano each had 13 points for Rancho Santiago. Dave Delaney was 13 of 17 for 29 points.

In another nonconference game:

L.A. Harbor 88, Fullerton 70--Terry Nelson, a transfer from Cal State Fullerton, scored 21 for host L.A. Harbor (12-7). Rashone Lewis had 19 and Darryl Griffin 10 to lead Fullerton (8-7). Tim Tillman had six points and a career-high 17 rebounds also for Fullerton.

In the Cypress four-team tournament:

Cypress 98, Compton 75--Chris Bowen had a career-high 21 points for host Cypress. He was eight of 10 from the floor and was four of five on three-point attempts. Cypress shot 60% after shooting 71% in a 87-65 victory over Compton last Friday in the semifinal round of the Glendale tournament.

Grayle Humphrey was four of four on free throws to set the Cypress record for consecutive free throws at 29. Humphrey, a sophomore guard, passed the mark of 27 set last season by Vince Hizon. Hizon, a sophomore forward, scored 15 points and led Cypress with nine rebounds. Brian Kenney scored 15 and Ian Donnely, who missed a game with a leg injury, came back to score 12 for Cypress (11-2).

Cypress plays El Camino at 8 tonight in the championship game. MiraCosta plays Compton for third place at 6 p.m.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Orange Coast 111, San Bernardino Valley 57--Erika Manning and Kami Bigler scored 20 points each for host Orange Coast (15-3). The point total was the school’s highest in a game in two seasons.

Cindy Koller added 16 points and eight rebounds, Heidi Hasemann had 11 points and eight rebounds and Stefanie Moorman had 11 points for Orange Coast.

Michelle Hennessey had eight points, 11 assists and nine steals for OCC. San Bernardino Valley had 35 turnovers to 12 for OCC, which led at the half, 57-22.
