ROUNDUP : Chatsworth Succumbs to Marshall in 4th Quarter

Share

Marshall High’s deliberate offense and free-throw shooting wore down a disinterested Chatsworth team en route to a 42-32 first-round victory Tuesday in the Chaminade Christmas classic.

Late in the second quarter, Marshall went into its slowdown four-corner offense and consistently used it to beat Chatsworth to the basket for the rest of the night.

Marshall’s offense also frustrated the Chancellors into committing numerous fouls. Marshall hit 15 of 23 free throws, while Chatsworth converted only two of seven from the line.

“The difference was they outhustled us,” Chatsworth coach Gary Shira said. “They came to play, we didn’t.”

Chatsworth played the game without three players, including its leading scorer. According to Shira, Chatsworth’s best player informed him that he would not attend the game because of personal reasons.

“We probably would’ve lost (even if he was at the game),” Shira said. “We’re just not a very dedicated basketball team right now.”

Chatsworth took an 8-7 lead late in the first quarter before Hank Hou, who led all scorers with 15 points, hit a three-point shot to give Marshall a lead it would never relinquish.

Chatsworth kept the game close, however, partly because of Chris Dunbars’ six first-half points.

Marshall’s offense slowed to a crawl early in the second half. Mark Umemoto’s two three-point baskets and Hou’s free throw accounted for all of Marshall’s scoring in the third quarter.

But the Chancellors had trouble getting the ball and hitting open shots and could only match Marshall’s seven points in the period.

In the final quarter, Chatsworth pressured Marshall’s corners and cut the lead to four, 28-24, on Dunbars’ steal and layup with 5:35 remaining.

Marshall tried to pull away, but consecutive baskets by Chatsworth’s Marco Gonzales cut Marshall’s lead to six.

Marshall hit eight of nine free throws in the final 5:20 to hold off Chatsworth.
