Injured guard Barry Manning will sit out the rest of the season, leaving South Carolina without its team captain and most experienced player for 22 games.

“As of right now, we’re not going to play him,” Coach George Felton said Tuesday. “His hand is still sore, and it could take two, three, four weeks to find out if he could play.

“If he continues to play it’s not going to heal. I’m not going to play him with a splint because he can’t handle the ball. And I’m not going to take a chance on him doing something even more damaging.”

The 6-foot-4 junior point guard, who averaged 13.7 points in South Carolina’s first four games of the season, chipped a bone in his left wrist and has been out of action since a loss to Tennessee on Dec. 18.

Manning will apply for a medical redshirt year, Felton said.
