HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Poway Has 32 Steals in Tournament Victory Over Monte Vista

Poway was outrebounded and outshot but not outhustled as the Titans’ press led to 32 steals and a 76-57 victory over Monte Vista in the first round of the Mt. Carmel Tournament.

Greg Sorrell scored 18 points, and Frank Garrett added 17 for Poway (7-0). Joe McNaull scored 30 points, and Jeff Polinsky added 17 for Monte Vista, which outrebounded Poway, 31-18, and made 26 of 42 shots.

In other Mt. Carmel Tournament games:

Santa Barbara 73, Oceanside 53--Santa Barbara led by only four points with five minutes remaining but pulled away for the victory. Jerry Garrett scored 26 points for Oceanside (6-4).

Burroughs 105, San Pasqual 78--San Pasqual was no match for Burroughs without 6-10 junior center Eric Meek, who was benched for two weeks by his doctor in hopes of preventing a stress fracture in his foot. Meek, one of the top players in the county, will be cleared to play again Tuesday and will then be on a day-to-day basis, San Pasqual Coach Tom Buck said.

Santana Tournament

Rancho Buena Vista 66, Chula Vista 65--Darryl Parker had 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead RBV (2-4). Malloy Hester added 15 points. Carnell Penn scored 20 points for Chula Vista.

Lincoln 88, Southwest 51--Darryl McMillan scored 23 points, and John McCartney added 16 for No. 8 Lincoln (8-4). The Hornets led, 46-28, at halftime and then outscored Southwest, 17-9, in the third quarter.

Montgomery Tournament

Central El Centro 86, Montgomery 43--James Smith scored 30 points to lead Central El Centro over the hosts. Mahrlowe Abuan led Montgomery with nine points. Central led, 35-21, at halftime and outscored Montgomery, 22-9, in the third to put it away.

San Dieguito 80, Christian 65--The Clarks combined for 55 of Christian’s points put it wasn’t enough as five players scored in double figures to lead San Dieguito. Tony Clark scored 49 points for Christian.

Nogales Christmas Tournament

Torrey Pines 97, La Serna 53--Torrey Pines rebounded from its first loss of the season, defeating La Serna to advance to today’s consolation semifinals against Azusa. Bart Brandenburg scored 26 points and Carter Brown added 18 for Torrey Pines (10-1).

Ontario Kiwanis Tournament

St. Augustine 66, Rosemead 59--Bryan Cantwell scored 14 points and had 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals for St. Augustine (7-4) in the first-round game.

Baron Optimist Tournament

Crawford 75, Mar Vista 41--Tracy Halton led Crawford with 19 points. Mar Vista was led by Tim Page with 12 and Tim O’Neal with 11. Crawford led, 41-13, at halftime.

Kearny 70, Mar Vista 56--Nel Galuz and Tim O’Neal each scored 15 points for Mar Vista (2-8). Kearny led, 36-19, at halftime.

Girls

Point Loma/Ben Fischer Tournament

Point Loma 63, Monte Vista 16--Tyeast Brown had 30 points and 25 rebounds, and Stacy Wainwright added 17 points for the No. 1 Pointers (11-0) in a second-round game at Point Loma.

North (Bakersfield) 55, Helix 33--Nicole Cando scored 11 for Helix (2-4).

Granite Hills 40, Chula Vista 35--Salli Wade was the only scorer in double figures leading Granite Hills (6-4) with 17 points.

San Marcos 35, Patrick Henry 32--Tami Oviatt had 15 points and 16 rebounds to lead San Marcos. Tammy Kotnik scored 15 points to lead Patrick Henry.

Ramona Tournament

Castle Park 78, Ramona Junior Varsity 17--Christine Murguia scored 31 points and Debbie Davis 22 to lead Castle Park (8-1).

Prince Rupert 57, Montgomery 47--The score was tied, 44-44, with three minutes remaining when Prince Rupert pulled ahead.
