TONIGHT’S HIGHLIGHTS

NONCONFERENCE

CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE (1-7) at SDSU (7-5), 7:30

Radio--KFMB (760).

The game is the third in four nights for San Diego State, which had its winning streak at the San Diego Sports Arena stopped at seven games in a 57-52 loss to Villanova in the championship of the Texaco Star tournament Thursday. Poor shooting has been a constant problem for the Aztecs, who are making 44.1% of their field-goal attempts. Senior guard Michael Best, counted on to provide outside scoring, is shooting 38.9%. Junior forward Shawn Jamison continues to lead in scoring (16.5 points per game) and rebounding (6.1). Central Connecticut State has lost five in a row, the latest Thursday at USC, 92-68. The Blue Devils’ only victory is over Division II C.W. Post.

COLUMBIA (2-6) at UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO (4-7), 7:30

After losing six of seven games before Christmas, USD Coach Hank Egan had a week off to analyze his club. “What we decided to do,” Egan said, “was have the coach quit putting so much pressure on these kids to develop so fast. The best thing for me to do was to work with them.” For one game, at least, it worked. USD defeated Western Kentucky, 72-66, Thursday. The Toreros had season-high percentages in field goals (.550) and free throws (.794) and held a 36-19 rebounding edge. Columbia visits USD’s Sports Center having lost to Cal, 98-61, Wednesday. The Lions finished 8-18 and seventh in the Ivy League last season. The game will follow the USD women vs. Arizona State at 5 p.m.
