Willie Brown, former All-Pro defensive back for the Raiders and later an assistant coach under Tom Flores, has been hired as secondary coach by George Allen, the new Cal State Long Beach coach

Allen also offered a job to Joe Walton, fired as New York Jets coach on Dec. 26, but Allen told The Times Sunday that it’s doubtful Walton would accept.

“I’d love to have him, but I don’t think he could afford to take the job,” Allen said. “He had a year left on his contract with the Jets, so he’s entitled to that salary. I don’t know if the Jets would be willing to pay the difference if he came to work for us.”

Allen said he talked to Walton last week. “We talked for about a half-hour,” Allen said. “I mainly called Joe to wish him well, and we got around to talking about his future. He’s a good man and a close friend.”

Walton was an assistant for the Washington Redskins from 1974-80, working under Allen from ‘74-77. Walton told Newsday: “Yes, George called me, but I’d rather not talk about football right now.”
