A San Diego man charged with robbing 17 stores, mostly “Blockbuster” video shops, pleaded innocent Wednesday at his arraignment.

Roberto Cruz Loza, 31, is accused of the 17 robberies that occurred between Sept. 26 and Dec. 28, 1989.

San Diego Municipal Judge Timothy Tower ordered bail set at $250,000 at the request of Deputy Dist. Atty. Steve Anear.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Feb. 7.

Loza was arrested in late December by U.S. Customs agents at the border as he was returning from Tijuana. Anear said Loza’s car license plate had been tagged as belonging to a suspect in the robbery series.

Anear said Loza was paroled in April, 1989, after serving a sentence for robbery.

Before his arrest, the video chain had announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to the robber’s arrest and conviction.
