A motorist who tried to pull to the side of the San Diego Freeway today after debris caused a tire blowout in the car pool lane was involved in a two-vehicle accident in which four people were injured. The southbound lanes were closed for more than 90 minutes during the morning rush hour.

The accident occurred about 5:30 a.m. when a sports car that was pulling to the shoulder was struck from behind by a pick-up truck just north of the Fairview Road off-ramp, California Highway Patrol Officer Angel Johnson said.

The sports car slammed into the center divider and the truck crossed all traffic lanes and crashed into trees off the right shoulder of the freeway, Johnson said.

All four lanes of the freeway were closed from 5:39 a.m to 7:10 a.m today as rescue workers pried the victims from the wreckage, she said.

Helicopters were sent to the scene to take the driver and two passengers of the sports car and the sole occupant of the truck to nearby hospitals. The victims’ names and extent of their injuries were not immediately known, Johnson said.
