NCAA Executive Director Dick Schultz says he sees no possibility of a Division I-A football playoff being adopted in the next few years.

Speaking at a sports business conference, Schultz said a study found that 72% of Division I-A coaches oppose a playoff.

“The Division I presidents are strongly opposed,” Schultz said. “I think the only purpose would be to produce more money. . . . ‘Never’ is something you can’t say. I can see the possibility that some day we may have one. But I don’t see it in the immediate future.”

When Notre Dame beat Colorado in the Orange Bowl and Miami beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, there was a debate over which team should be national champion because there was no season-ending head-to-head match-up. Schultz, however, said he heard no huge demand for a playoff.
