Teams Involved in Thursday’s Brawl Both Pick Up Victories

North Carolina A&T; and North Carolina Central, playing for the first time since Thursday night when their game was suspended in the second half after a brawl involving players, band members and fans resulted in seven people being hospitalized, both won Saturday night.

N.C. A&T;, playing at home in Greensboro, N.C., site of Thursday night’s game, beat Delaware State, 74-71, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game.

N.C. Central defeated Winston-Salem State, 74-64, at Winston-Salem, N.C. A jump shot by Derrick Leak helped N.C. Central take command in the second half. The trouble Thursday night started after Leak was fouled by N.C. A&T;’s Jimmy Humphries. The two players shoved each other and then the situation got out of hand.

The loss prevented Winston-Salem State Coach Clarence (Bighouse) Gaines from winning his 800th game and joining former Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp as the only NCAA coaches with 800 victories.

“I figure this 800 deal will come through sooner or later,” Gaines said. “We would have liked to finish it off tonight. All I can say is, we’re 799 and holding.”
