Countywide : Police Issue Photo of ‘Mr. Magoo’ Bandit

The FBI on Tuesday released a photograph of the “Mr. Magoo” bandit who is believed to have staged five bank robberies in Orange County during the past year.

Dubbed “Mr. Magoo” because of his thick-lensed glasses and his resemblance to the cartoon character, the bandit struck again a week ago at the Laguna Hills branch of Wells Fargo Bank, the FBI said.

FBI officials say investigators have linked the bandit to the robbery of a Household Bank branch in Westminster on Jan. 30, 1989. Since then, officials say, he has also robbed a Wells Fargo Bank branch in El Toro and is believed to be responsible for two robberies at Western Federal Savings and Loan in Seal Beach within a week of each other last year.

An FBI spokesman declined to disclose the total taken in the robberies.

Armed with a small chrome-plated revolver, the robber usually presents a typewritten note and envelopes in which to place the money.

Agents described the robber as 60 to 65 years old, weighing 165 pounds, measuring 5 feet, 8 inches tall, and having brown, graying hair and balding in front. He has a tattoo on his right forearm and also likes to wear barber-type shirts outside his trousers, the FBI said.

Anyone with information about the robberies is asked to contact the FBI at (714) 542-8825 or (213) 477-6565.
