COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Peeler Scores 42 to Lead No. 1 Missouri, 95-93

Sophomore Anthony Peeler scored a career-high 42 points and dished off to freshman Travis Ford for the game-winning basket with five seconds left as No. 1-ranked Missouri escaped with a 95-93 victory over Iowa State Wednesday night in a Big Eight game at Ames, Iowa.

Peeler broke a Hilton Coliseum record and tied a 21-year-old Missouri mark by making 20 consecutive free throws in lifting the Tigers (20-1, 6-0 in the Big Eight) to their first victory at Iowa State since 1984.

Iowa State (7-10, 2-3) couldn’t hold a 91-87 lead with 1:34 left.

No. 2 Kansas 90, Colorado 69--The Jayhawks won their 13th consecutive home game as the Buffaloes shot only 37% and had just one field goal during a six-minute stretch in the first half in a Big Eight game at Lawrence, Kan.

The Jayhawks (21-1, 4-1) led 48-27 at halftime. For the Buffaloes (9-10, 1-5), it was their 47th straight Big Eight road loss.

Mark Randall had 17 points for Kansas. Shaun Vandiver, the Big Eight’s second-leading scorer, had 28 for Colorado.

No. 3 Arkansas 70, Rice 66--Todd Day scored 23 points and made two key free throws with 20 seconds left as the No. 3 Razorbacks held off the Owls at Houston for their 10th consecutive victory.

Arkansas is 18-2 overall and 9-0 in the Southwest Conference. Rice is 9-9 and 4-4.

No. 5 Duke 94, Clemson 80--Freshman guard Bobby Hurley had 18 points and 11 assists as the No. 5 Blue Devils (17-3, 7-4) defeated the Tigers (15-5, 4-3) in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Durham, N.C.

No. 8 Purdue 91, No. 4 Michigan 73--Tony Jones scored 23 points and the Boilermakers (16-2, 8-0) tightened their grip on first place in the Big Ten with a victory over the No. 4 Wolverines (15-4, 5-3) at Ann Arbor, Mich.

No. 9 Oklahoma 105 Nebraska 64--Damon Patterson scored 20 points and Jackie Jones had 16 points and 13 rebounds in leading the Sooners (15-2, 4-1) to a Big Eight victory over the Cornhuskers (7-11, 0-5) at Norman, Okla.

No. 14 LSU 79, Mississippi 77--Chris Jackson, held scoreless in the first half, got 28 points in the second half and Maurice Williamson made two foul shots with eight seconds left, as the No. 14 Tigers (15-4, 6-3) won at Oxford, Miss., to maintain a share of first place in the Southeastern Conference. Ole Miss fell to 3-6 and 6-12.

No. 23 Xavier 90, Cincinnati 88--Jamal Walker, who had 20 points, made a three-pointer with seven seconds to play in overtime at Cincinnati, lifting the Musketeers (16-2) over their cross-town rival.

Walker’s jumper from the right side gave Xavier its only lead of the overtime. Cincinnati is 12-9.

Tennessee 73, Vanderbilt 72--Greg Bell, who scored 28 points, made a 10-foot jumper with five seconds left to give the Volunteers (11-7, 6-3) an SEC victory over the Commodores (12-6, 5-4) at Knoxville, Tenn.

Georgia 88, Auburn 75--Litterial Green scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half when the Bulldogs (13-5, 6-3) erased a nine-point deficit to beat the Tigers (6-13, 3-6) in an SEC game at Athens, Ga.

Mississippi State 87, Kentucky 86--Doug Hartsfield, who scored 22 points, made a free throw with two seconds left in overtime to lead the Bulldogs (11-7, 4-6) past the Wildcats (9-10, 5-5) in an SEC game at Starkville, Miss.

North Carolina State 84, Virginia 58--Chris Corchiani scored 20 points and the Wolfpack (15-5, 4-3) made all six of its three-point shots in the first half and went on to rout the Cavaliers (12-6, 2-5) in an ACC game at Raleigh, N.C.
