COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Bladow Strikes Out 10; UC Irvine Beats Cal State Los Angeles

David Bladow had 10 strikeouts in seven innings to lead UC Irvine to a 5-1 victory over Cal State Los Angeles Friday in a nonconference baseball game at Cal State Los Angeles.

Bladow allowed four hits and an unearned run before being replaced by Mike Rood.

Rood allowed only a hit in the final two innings for Irvine (1-1).

Mike Goodcase had two hits and four RBIs for Irvine. Goodcase had a two-run, inside-the-park home run in the eighth inning.

In another nonconference baseball game:

Stanford 8, Cal State Fullerton 1--David McCarty hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to lead host Stanford (4-0). Sam Colarusso (0-1) allowed two runs and four hits over six innings for Fullerton.

Fullerton’s only run came when Rich Gonzales hit a solo home run in the ninth. Fullerton (1-1) had only five hits.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s basketball:

Cal State Dominguez Hills 73, Chapman 63--Ray Bennett scored 19 points to lead host Dominguez Hills (7-13 overall, 3-4 in league play). Dominguez led, 39-35, at the half but Chapman rallied to tie it, 47-47, with 13 minutes left. Dominguez then went on a 12-4 run.

Roger Middleton scored 18 and Frantz had 12 for Chapman (2-5, 10-10). The same teams play tonight at 8:05 at Chapman.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball:

Chapman College 79, Cal State Dominguez Hills 48--Guard Ruth Akahoshi led visiting Chapman with 21 points, including six-of-eight three-point shooting. Chapman (15-6, 3-3) led, 47-18, at halftime. Chapman will play host to Dominguez Hills tonight.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Cal State San Bernardino 70, Southern California College 64--Host SCC led, 35-28, at halftime, and built a 42-30 lead in the second half before going cold. San Bernardino forward Teri Paine scored 18 of her 26 points in the second half. SCC center Nora Menken scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds. Kristin Bevis added 16 points for SCC (11-10).

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s tennis:

Point Loma Nazarene 9, Southern California College 0--Host Point Loma Nazarene (2-1, 1-0) was led By Gary Rees, who defeated Jim Mansfield, 6-1, 6-2. Southern California College is 0-2, 0-1 in league.
