Sweden was eliminated in the first round of Davis Cup tennis competition when Italy’s Paolo Cane beat Mats Wilander, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, in a 4-hour 37-minute match played over two days. Cane’s victory gave Italy a 3-2 upset victory in the competition at Cagliari, Sardinia.
The loss marks the first time since 1983 that Sweden failed to reach the Davis Cup finals. Italy advances to the quarterfinals and will play Austria.
