District 3 Honors Cal Lutheran’s Lee

Brenda Lee, a senior guard for Cal Lutheran, was named NAIA District 3 Player of the Week after scoring 45 points and grabbing 37 rebounds in two games.

Lee had a career-high 18 rebounds and scored 27 points in an 80-79 victory over Southern California College on Jan. 30. She followed that performance with 19 rebounds and 18 points Saturday in an 82-69 loss to Point Loma Nazarene.

Lee, who is averaging 14.7 points and 11.7 rebounds, is Cal Lutheran’s only basketball player, man or woman, to be named district player of the week this season.

Tisha Walker of Thousand Oaks was 15th among a field of 16 after the compulsory figures Wednesday in the U. S. Figure Skating Championships in Salt Lake City.

Walker, 15, competing in the senior ladies division, will move on to the original program tonight.

Tom Briggs, an All-American linebacker at Moorpark College, has committed to West Virginia after considering Utah, San Jose State and Penn State, Moorpark Coach Jim Bittner said.

Several other members of Moorpark’s 9-2 Orange County Bowl team also have chosen schools, according to Bittner.

Linebacker Ray Mosones is already taking classes at Sonoma State and receiver Rick Wright is attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Linebacker David Joller also will attend San Luis Obispo.

Defensive back Jim Hand has gone to Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo., and defensive back Troy Thomas is looking at Cal State Northridge and Redlands, Bittner said.

Bittner said running back John Brown will sign with Southern Utah State on Friday and that center Carlos Hernandez is leaning toward Southern Oregon.

Mike Lieberthal of Westlake High has made an oral commitment to attend Arizona State.

Lieberthal, a catcher, batted .408 last season and he had four home runs, three doubles and nine stolen bases.

Beth Welch, a three-year starter as setter on the Washington State women’s volleyball team, has transferred to Cal State Northridge and will be eligible as a senior next season, Coach Walt Ker said. Welch is a former Thousand Oaks High standout.

With the addition of Welch, Ker plans to sign only two high school recruits--a middle blocker and a left-side hitter.

Roger Evans, the Simi Valley High girls’ track coach, will coach the Sport For Understanding track team that is traveling to Europe this summer.

Participants and volunteer coaches will live with host families.

A fund-raiser, an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast to benefit the Channel Islands High football stadium fund, will be held Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m. in the school cafeteria.
