HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Oceanside Loses Garrett, Three Others
- Share via
With his team nearing a playoff berth, Oceanside Coach Steve Kinder received a crushing blow Thursday when he was informed that three players had been ruled ineligible--including leading scorer Jerry Garrett--and that another had quit the team.
It appears that the troubled high school athletic career of Garrett, who has been declared ineligible several times because of grade problems, is over. Garrett was averaging 17 points a game.
“It’s tragic to the team,” Kinder said. “I’m disappointed, and I’m sure he was. But Jerry did it to himself. He knew what was going on. He’s a bright kid. He just didn’t apply himself.”
Marlon Jenkins (six points a game) and Alvin Phillips (three) were also ruled academically ineligible, and center Kenya Hunt (11 points a game) left the team.
“I’m down to nine players, and I’m happy with the nine I have,” Kinder said.
Oceanside (12-10, 5-4) is third in the Avocado League with three games to play.
