A Burbank man and a Ventura man died in a boating accident in Florida during an annual reunion this weekend of former members of a semiprofessional football team.

Donald Rohrback, 58, of Burbank and Kent D. Atwater, 60, of Ventura died in a three-boat collision at a bend in the St. John’s River, about 30 miles west of Daytona Beach.

The accident, in which another man also died, occurred about 7:30 a.m. when a boat trying to overtake another boat crashed into a third boat coming in the opposite direction, Florida officials said.

Most of the passengers on board the small fishing boats were ejected into the river.

The men were all friends who had played together on a semiprofessional football team in Florida.

Atwater, a real estate broker, was very involved in water sports and surfed several times a week, his widow said Saturday.

Jeanie Gable Atwater said her husband had two children and four stepchildren. Members of the Rohrback family could not be reached for comment.
