Tim Mayotte joined top-seeded Ivan Lendl in the final of Milan’s indoor tennis tournament by defeating John McEnroe, 6-4, 6-4, in their semifinal match Saturday night at Milan, Italy.

McEnroe, ejected from the Australian Open last month, missed his fifth Milan final as he struggled with an erratic serve and was unable to cope with Mayotte’s aggressive play.

Lendl, the top seeded player, advanced to the final by overtaking Pete Sampras of Rancho Palos Verdes, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Mayotte, 0-15 against Lendl, attacked McEnroe at every chance. In the first set, he broke McEnroe’s serve in the third game before losing his own in the sixth, but broke again in the ninth game for a 5-4 lead and served out the set.

He broke again in the first game of the second set and went on to beat McEnroe for only the second time in seven meetings since 1982.

Unseeded Todd Witsken advanced to the first singles final of his career, overcoming a shaky start for a straight-sets semifinal victory over Joey Rive, 6-4, 7-6 (6-4), in a $250,000 tournament at San Francisco. Witsken will meet the winner of the Jim Grabb and Andre Agassi match.
