The oldest high school football rivalry in the Valley will be renewed in the fall, 71 years after its inception.

Van Nuys and San Fernando, two of the first four high schools in the Valley, will meet in a nonleague encounter. The last time the teams met, in 1978, San Fernando won, 62-0. That victory marked San Fernando’s 13th consecutive win over its longtime rival.

San Fernando, which finished 5-6 last season and lost a first-round playoff game to Crenshaw, currently competes in the 4-A Northwest Valley Conference. Van Nuys, which finished 5-5 last season and lost a first-round playoff game to Locke, plays in the 3-A Valley Pac-8 Conference.
