PACIFIC 10 ROUNDUP : Washington Stops Payton and 16th-Ranked Oregon St., 66-57

Washington’s Eldridge Recasner scored 28 points and the Huskies held Oregon State scoring leader Gary Payton to 13 points Thursday night in beating the No. 16 Beavers, 66-57, at Seattle.

Payton, the point guard who was averaging 26.5 for the conference leaders, was held to only two points in the first half when the Huskies led by as many as 15 points. Payton, who hit only three of 11 shots from the field, committed three fouls in the first half and picked up his fourth with 7:56 left in the game.

The Huskies (10-13, 4-10 in conference play) led, 28-13, with 3:40 left in the first half, but watched the Beavers (18-4, 11-2) cut the lead to 58-54 with 1:13 left.

A layup by Dion Brown with 1:03 left, two free throws by Brent Merritt with 47 seconds to play and two more by Recasner with 28 seconds remaining gave Washington a 64-54 lead.

No. 20 Arizona 71, Arizona State 50--Matt Muehlebach made five three-point baskets and the Wildcats blocked a school-record 13 shots at Tucson.

The victory was Arizona’s 45th in a row at home, the nation’s longest streak.

The Wildcats improved to 17-4 and 11-3. Arizona State is 12-11 and 5-9.

Brian Williams had five blocks for Arizona, Ed Stokes and Sean Rooks three apiece. Wayne Womack and Brian David each had one.

Oregon 71, Washington State 66--Terrell Brandon scored 19 points at Pullman, Wash., as the Ducks handed the Cougars their 13th consecutive defeat.

Oregon jumped out to an early first-half lead and never let the Cougars get closer than five points.

The Ducks improved to 12-10 and 7-6. Washington State (7-17, 1-13), equaled a school record set in 1928 for most consecutive losses.

Oregon made just seven of 14 free throws in the last seven minutes as Washington State whittled a 13-point deficit to five, 67-62.
