TENNIS ROUNDUP : Line Call Helps Lendl Rally, Beat Curren
A controversial line call in a second-set tiebreaker helped top-seeded Ivan Lendl turn back Kevin Curren Friday in the quarterfinals of the SkyDome World tournament at Toronto.
Lendl, who rallied from 0-5 and saved seven match points in the tiebreaker before rallying to win, 6-7 (7-4), 7-6 (14-12), 6-3, and advance to today’s semifinals against John McEnroe.
McEnroe celebrated his 31st birthday with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Jay Berger.
Top-seeded Boris Becker was leading Paolo Cane, 6-4, 3-2, when the Italian retired with a back injury at the Belgian Indoor Championships at Brussels.
Becker joins Carl-Uwe Steeb, Miloslav Mecir and Magnus Gustafsson in the semifinals.
Martina Navratilova beat Tami Whitlinger, 6-0, 6-1, to advance to the semifinals of the Virginia Slims of Chicago.
