COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Sharts, Clayton Lift CSUN Past San Diego, 4-1

Cal State Northridge’s Scott Sharts broke a 1-1 tie with a run-scoring groundout in the fifth inning and the visiting Matadors went on to a 4-1 nonconference baseball victory over the University of San Diego on Friday.

Sharts also cracked a double and finished with two RBIs in support of starter and winner Craig Clayton (2-1), who struck out eight and walked eight in 6 2/3 innings.

Todd Denhart entered in the seventh to earn his third save and send USD (3-5) to its fourth consecutive loss.

Catcher Mike Sims was two for three for Northridge (5-4).

In other baseball games:

Canyons 8, Pima 7--Gary Morgan hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to give Canyons a victory in the second round of the Casey Stengel tournament.

Canyons starter Lance Gibson bounced back from a grand slam by Bill Coons in the second to earn his first win.

East L.A. 3, Pierce 2--Starter Chris Murphy (1-2) was the hard-luck loser for Pierce in a nonconference game at East L. A. Murphy threw a complete game, but East L. A. (3-4) scored the winning run in the third on a squeeze bunt by Pat Hart.

El Camino 8, Moorpark 0--Originally scheduled to play at Allan Hancock in the first round of the Central Coast tournament, Moorpark instead played host to El Camino after inclement weather forced rescheduling of the tournament.

Starter Mike Goldstein took the loss for Moorpark (4-3), which mustered only five hits.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Poly Pomona 61, Cal State Northridge 38--Stephanie Coons scored a game-high 17 points and Marcine Edmonds added 12 as the Lady Broncos (20-3, 9-0 in conference play) clinched a share of their ninth consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Assn. title with the victory at CSUN.

SWIMMING

CCAA championships--The Cal State Northridge men and women failed to win any events in the second day of the conference meet at Bakersfield, and both teams fell further off the pace.

The men are in third with 257 points, 14 behind second-place Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Bakersfield leads with 553 points.

The Matador women are in second with 356.5 points, trailing Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with 501.

Erica Freeman was Northridge’s top individual with a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.51.

MEN’S TRACK

Glendale 78, Santa Barbara 73, West. L.A. 21--Fred Mizarian won the 1,500 and 5,000 meters for host Glendale in its Western State Conference opener.

WOMEN’S TRACK

Glendale 87, Santa Barbara 57--Nicole Jimenez, the Western State Conference cross-country champion, won the 1,500 (5:05.6) for host Glendale (2-0).

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pierce d. Santa Monica, 15-2, 15-12, 15-13--The passing of outside hitters Brent Couture and Ed Gilson set up the Pierce offense in an easy Western State Conference victory at Santa Monica.
