MEN’S BASKETBALL

Tim Rapp scored a school-record 42 points and UC San Diego won 20 games in a season for the first time with a 99-74 victory over visiting Cal State San Bernardino. UCSD, ranked No. 20 in NCAA Division III, is 20-5.

Rapp broke the record of 40 set by Greg Kamansky against Christ College in 1987. Rapp also set a single-season scoring record with 596 points, 30 more than Tom Wight had in the 1981-82 season.

Brad Soucie (38 points) led a second-half comeback as Christian Heritage (25-5) defeated Grand Canyon College, 89-87, in the first round of the Grand Canyon Tournament. Mark Kraatz scored on a driving layup with 35 seconds left to give the Hawks an 88-85 lead. He also made a free throw with two seconds left to end the scoring.

BASEBALL

The University of San Diego (3-5) lost its fourth consecutive game, 4-1, against visiting Cal State Northridge. USD’s Rick Doane hit a home run, his first, in the third inning to tie the game, 1-1. A run in the fifth and two in the sixth gave Northridge (5-4) the victory.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The University of San Diego couldn’t hold on to a 12-point halftime lead and wound up losing, 75-66, in a West Coast Conference game at the University of San Francisco.

USD was 36 of 45 from the line. Angie Straub had a career-high 16 points for USD (15-9, 5-6).

Cal Baptist defeated UC San Diego, 79-69. Nadirah Scott, Cari Young and Nancy Caparaz each scored 13 points for the Tritons (12-10).

MEN’S TENNIS

It was not a good day for seeded players, as four of the top eight were ousted during the first day of the 19th San Diego Intercollegiate Tournament at the University of San Diego.

Yoram Baron of U.S. International, the No. 2 seeded player, was upset in the first round, 6-4, 7-5, 7-5, by Matt Holt of Pepperdine. Top-seeded Jose Luis Noriega of USD won both his singles matches to advance to today’s third round.
