Christian Heritage Wins Grand Canyon Tourney

Christian Heritage defeated Menlo College, 100-82, in the finals of the Grand Canyon basketball tournament in Phoenix. It was the seventh consecutive victory for Christian Heritage.

Mark Kraatz led Christian Heritage (26-5) with 30 points and Brad Soucie added 16.

Point Loma Nazarene led until six minutes remained but lost its 11th consecutive game, 79-72, at Westmont College in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.

Ron Hubbard led PLNC (6-21, 0-10) with 27 points and Brian Thurston added 19. Peter Partain led 10th-ranked Westmont (24-2) with 20.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Pacific turned the ball over 25 times, but still managed to defeat San Diego State, 82-68, in a Big West Conference game.

Julie Evans led the Aztecs (4-21, 3-10) with 30 points, and Lori Lollis added 10.

Candida Echeverria led the University of San Diego with 15 points, but the Toreros lost to host St. Mary’s, 85-70, in a West Coast Athletic Conference game.

USD fell to 15-10 and 5-7. St. Mary’s is 19-6, 9-2.

Cari Young had 21 points as UC San Diego defeated Redlands, 64-63, in a nonconference Division III game.

Tina Peterson had 18 points for Redlands. UCSD is 13-10; Redlands is 7-17.

Shannon Abrams scored 22 points but it wasn’t enough for Point Loma Nazarene College, which was defeated at Biola University, 69-65, in a nonconference game.

Camille Armijo added 17 and Shawndel Reddic 10 for PLNC (14-12). Biola is 20-5.

BASEBALL

The University of San Diego scored six runs in the eighth and went on to defeat visiting Cal State Northridge, 9-7, in a nonconference game.

Kevin Herde’s bases-loaded double broke a 6-6 tie in the inning. Tom Cheek (2-0), who came on in the seventh, was the winning pitcher for USD (4-5). Todd Denhart (1-1), who came on in the eighth, was the loser for CSN (5-5).

UC San Diego’s Henry Jimenez went seven for nine with a home run, the first hit at UCSD’s new stadium, in the Triton’s doubleheader split with La Verne.

UCSD (2-3) lost the first game, 8-7, and won the second, 11-3, in a game shortened to five innings because of rain.

Jimenez, a left fielder, was five for five in the first game. He finished the day with four runs scored and two RBIs. The Tritons’ John Meyers collected four hits, including two run-scoring doubles.

Kevin Hazlett went three for three--a single, double and bases-loaded homer--but Point Loma Nazarene College lost to The Master’s, 10-9, in a non-conference game.

Tom Martin (0-1) took the loss for PLNC (2-3-1). Rob Minyard (1-0) was the winner for The Master’s (2-5).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UCSD fell one match short of a sweep, but defeated host Pomona Pitzer, 5-1, in a nonconference match. Winning in the top three singles positions for the Tritons were: Christine Behrens, Robyn Inaba and Susan Carney.

Doubles play was suspended because of rain. UCSD improved to 4-1.

SDSU lost to visiting UCLA, 7-2, to drop to 3-3. Paige Hammond was the Aztecs’ lone singles winner, defeating Helen Tu, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

SOFTBALL

U.S. International dropped both games of a doubleheader at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, losing first to Oregon, 5-1, and then to New Mexico State, 1-0.

Grossmont High School graduate Brenna Hancock, now of NMS, pitched a one-hitter against the Gulls.

CYCLING

San Diego State is second in the first day of the San Diego State cycling race at Lyons Valley course.

SDSU’s Pat Fitzpatrick leads the Men’s B division and the Aztecs’ Stephanie Lucero is third in the Women’s A category. UC Santa Barbara is the overall team leader.

BADMINTON

Asok Boopathy and Tom Reidy will meet in today’s 2:20 p.m. final of the 38th Dave Freeman Open at Balboa Park. Boopathy defeated Arifan Wiguna in the semifinals and Reidy beat Marc Padre.

RUGBY

Two defending champions, the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club and Cal State Long Beach, will defend their titles when the OMBAC Tournament championships are played this afternoon at Robb Field in Ocean Beach.

OMBAC will play Belmont Shore at 2:30 p.m. in the open division. Cal State Long Beach will face Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at 1 p.m. in the college division.
