PHILADELPHIA — The good news for Richey Reneberg was his first-round victory over Jim Pugh in the U.S. Pro Indoor tennis championship.
The bad news was his second-round opponent--top-seeded John McEnroe.
Reneberg of LaPorte, Tex. eliminated Pugh of Burbank 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 late Monday night and Wednesday will face McEnroe, who has won the U.S. Pro Indoor title four times.
The first day of the $1.2-million event was marked by the absence of the 16 seeded players who begin play today and Wednesday.
Top players on Tuesday’s schedule include No. 6 Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union, seventh-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador and No. 8 Jim Courier.
In another match Monday, Andrew Sznajder of Canada fought off six match points to defeat John Fitzgerald of Australia 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7).
