The good news for Richey Reneberg was his first-round victory over Jim Pugh in the U.S. Pro Indoor tennis championship.

The bad news was his second-round opponent--top-seeded John McEnroe.

Reneberg of LaPorte, Tex. eliminated Pugh of Burbank 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 late Monday night and Wednesday will face McEnroe, who has won the U.S. Pro Indoor title four times.

The first day of the $1.2-million event was marked by the absence of the 16 seeded players who begin play today and Wednesday.
